Matthew Lang

Legal Practice Director

Matt is the founder and Legal Practice Director of Lang Litigation and Construction Law. He has more than 20 years' experience in construction and commercial litigation. He advises on all stages of construction and engineering projects, from contract negotiation and drafting through to claims management and dispute resolution.

Before founding the firm, Matt was a Partner in the Projects, Infrastructure & Construction team at Western Australia's largest independent law firm. He has worked on some of the State's most significant infrastructure, construction, mining and engineering projects.

Matt has been recommended in Doyles Guide to leading Western Australian Construction & Infrastructure Litigation Lawyers.

Matt is an experienced advocate. He regularly appears as counsel in the Supreme Court, District Court and Magistrates Court, and in commercial arbitrations. He also frequently acts for builders and owners in building disputes before the State Administrative Tribunal.

Recent experience includes:

  • acting for a specialist contractor in Supreme Court proceedings, with claims and counterclaims totalling more than $13 million

  • representing a multinational technology subcontractor in claims arising from the construction of a major public hospital

  • acting for a leading luxury home builder in a commercial arbitration, with claims totalling $15 million

  • advising an international developer on issues arising from the construction of a high-rise, mixed-use residential development

  • acting for owners and builders in proceedings in the State Administrative Tribunal

Matt holds a Master of Laws from the University of Queensland, specialising in litigation and dispute resolution. He is a former member of the Master Builders WA Housing Council. He regularly presents to clients and industry groups on developments in construction law, including security of payment, construction contracts and claims management.

Danica Goodbody

Senior Consultant

Danica is a Senior Consultant at Lang Litigation and Construction Law. She has nearly 15 years' experience in commercial litigation and construction law, gained at leading law firms.

Danica advises clients on construction and engineering contracts, claims management, adjudications under security of payment legislation and commercial disputes. She has acted in complex high value Supreme Court and Federal Court proceedings.

Most recently, Danica has been seconded to BHP as a Legal Counsel, giving her first-hand insight into how major clients manage their projects, contracts and disputes, and she brings that commercial perspective to her advice.

Basil Georgiou

Senior Consultant

Basil is a Senior Consultant at Lang Litigation and Construction Law. He has more than 35 years' experience in construction law and dispute resolution, and is also an experienced arbitrator, mediator and adjudicator.

Basil was formerly the lead partner of the Projects, Infrastructure & Construction team at Western Australia’s largest independent law firm. He has acted for owners, developers, contractors and consultants on a wide range of onshore and offshore projects in the building and construction, energy, and mining and resources sectors, for Australian and multinational clients.

His experience covers both front-end and contentious work. He has prepared full suites of contracts for major contractors, including on two of Western Australia's major PPP projects, and has run disputes in the Supreme Court and District Court, as well as in arbitrations, expert determinations, adjudications and mediations.

Basil has been recognised by Chambers and Partners Asia, Best Lawyers Australia, Doyles Guide and Legal 500 Asia Pacific for his construction and dispute resolution work.

Experience includes:

  • managing a multi-million dollar dispute for an international contractor concerning a major cost overrun on an infrastructure project

  • acting for an international client in multi-million dollar disputes arising from the construction of a power station

  • negotiating and drafting contracts for the construction of several power stations

  • preparing the suite of contracts for the operation of an FPSO

  • contributing to the Alliancing Association of Australasia's reference model Project Alliance Agreement

Basil is the current Chair of the Society of Construction Law International Executive and a past Director and Chair of the Society of Construction Law Australia. He is a member of the Resolution Institute, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Law Society of Western Australia's Construction Group and has contributed to submissions on security of payment reform.
